Energy Auditing Tools

A package of ENSI Excel tools and set of Documents/Manuals for Energy Auditing of Buildings. The tools support calculation of U-floor, Infiltration, Emission efficiency, Distribution efficiency, Domestic hot water, Primary energy and CO2 emissions. The package also contains the Inspection Checklist template.

MS Excel based tool for calculation of total thermal transmittance between external and internal environment via different types of floor constructions taking into account thermal properties of floor and basement elements, geometry, soil, etc.
This user friendly tool includes calculation of the thermal transmittance for the following cases:
  • Slab-on-ground floor
  • Suspended floor
  • Heated basement
  • Unheated basement
  • Determining of U-floor according to temperature in the underfloor space
The calculations are based on EN ISO 13370:2007.

MS Excel based tool for calculation of air exchange per hour (h-1) based on parameters such as wind shielding factors, facade exposure, air leakage at 50 Pa, eventually mechanical ventilation properties, etc.

Emission Efficiency
MS Excel based tool for determination of thermal losses of emission sub-systems of heating and air heating systems. The calculations are based on EN 15316-2-1; with heat losses due to:
  • non-uniform space temperature distribution;
  • heat emitters embedded in the building structure;
  • control accuracy of the indoor temperature.
The tool provides calculation of emission efficiency for the following heat emitters:
  • radiators
  • integrated heating surfaces
  • electrical heating
  • combination
The calculations takes into account the annual energy need, indoor temperature and a number of parameters specific for each type of emission system such as location of emitters, temperature control, balancing, operation pattern, etc.
Results are provided as annual emission losses (kWh/m²) and emission efficiency in %.

Distribution Efficiency
MS Excel based tool for determination of thermal losses of water based distribution sub-system of heating and domestic hot water systems. The calculations are based on EN 15316-2-3:2007 taking into account pipe dimensions and lengths, location, thermal properties of materials and insulation, ambient and carrier temperatures, etc.
The tool enables user to include up to 3 distribution sub-systems in unheated spaces and 1 in heated space. 
Results are provided as annual thermal recovered and non-recovered losses (kWh/m²) and distribution efficiency in %.

Domestic Hot Water Calculation
MS Excel based tool for estimation of annual energy need for domestic hot water. The calculations are based on EN ISO 15316-3-1:2007.
Calculations can be performed for the actual building condition and after implementing energy efficiency measures in the DHW system. The tool enables user to estimate DHW consumption for 6 different tapping types/activities. Results are provided as:
  • Annual energy need for domestic hot water in litres and kWh/m²
  • Annual hot and mixed water volume in l/m² with corresponding average difference between hot water delivery temperature and cold water supply temperature
Primary energy and CO2 calculation
MS Excel based tool for determination of building's primary energy rating and emissions of carbon dioxide based on energy use (measured or calculated).
The tool consists of 3 worksheets:
  • Rating BEFORE which is for actual condition;
  • Rating AFTER for situation after implementing measures and
  • Rating SAVINGS, where the savings in primary energy and reduction of CO2 emission are presented.
The tool enables user to distribute energy use (actual condition and after measures) among various energy carriers (oil, gas, electricity, etc.). Based on national or custom PE factors and CO2 coefficients the tool will calculate corresponding annual primary energy in kWh/m² and emission of CO2 in kg/m² or ton.

Building Inspection Checklist
In order to perform energy auditing properly, extensive information about the building has to be collected and assessed. The Building Inspection Checklist is a MS Word template for efficient building data collection. The Checklist is divided into a number of sections with tables covering all information necessary for energy auditing of a building:
  • General building data
  • Energy and water consumption
  • Building envelope
  • Building systems such as heating, ventilation, DHW, cooling, etc.
A blank printout of the Checklist is useful for collecting information during the building inspection. Collected information can be entered into the electronic version of the Checklist, adjusted according to the actual project and become an important part of the Energy Audit Report.
